Top 5 Podcasts for Writing Group Inspiration

Two weeks ago, in a surprise move, my husband announced he would take a few days off and last week we enjoyed (I really mean it) a staycation. No schedule and no shoulds, have-tos or musts. Instead, each of us, in our own way, did a lot of puttering.

For me, puttering means a few things, including putting my headphones on, opening up Spotify and catching up with my fave podcasts.

Full disclosure, I'm not a sequential listener. Instead, I skip through episodes, and jump around months and years. I look for topics of interest. That's how I bumped into a few episodes that delivered a lot of writing group insight and inspiration!

To make it even better, I thought, why not share these links with you? Because if you’re thinking about a writing group, or you’re in one already, you want to be sure to get the most out of your experience.

So, here are the top five podcasts I selected for you. While you’ll find these podcasts wherever you listen, for convenience, I’ve shared a link to the show site, as well as a link to the individual episode on Spotify:

Starting out? You’ll get a lot from this podcast, which was launched late last year. Despite being relative newbies to the writing world, the team has covered a lot of useful topics. The June 18, 2024 episode is a discussion about the team's writing group. You’ll get their first-hand experiences of what works and what doesn’t.

Between the range of topics and the great interviews with authors, this podcast is a must-listen. Plus, each episode features genuine sharing from the two hosts, who provide their view into writers’ inner lives and feelings. The April 29, 2024 writing-group discussion explores the emotions, positive and negative, around groups.

If you’re a fantasy writer, the Toolshed is your go-to podcast about craft, marketing, and career. This May 2023 episode features a conversation among a small group of fantasy writers who share what they’ve learned about the value of taking active part in a writing community, and the benefits of their online writing group.

As an indy (or indie? Whatever!) author, what’s not to love about this podcast? From great interviews to investigations into relevant self-pub topics, you can apply tips and advice right away. The October 2023 conversation covers the benefits of collaborating with other writers, including through writing groups.

While this podcast leans toward traditional authors, who go the route of agents and publishers, you’ll get valuable insights into the industry. When I listen, I always come away with lots of helpful nuggets. The November 2020 episode tackles the topic of getting the most out of your writing group to support your development.

Without boring lectures, this series explores everything you want to know about writing techniques and skills. If you’re looking for info you can apply to grow in your craft, this is the place. In October 2020, the host examined writing group situations to avoid, discussing how they can hurt you and hold you back from achieving your goals.

What writing podcasts do you recommend? Do you know about some more writing-group themed episodes? Let me know in the comments!
